A typical Sydney semi-detached house was reworked to accommodate the needs of a young family, enjoy sunlight, embrace its small garden and carefully curate and frame its outlook to achieve a space that extends beyond its confined urban site.
Located near Balmoral Beach, the proposal is a simple one: to retain the original front half of this Mosman bungalow and introduce a new split level kitchen and living area opening to the garden. Opening to the sun via a double height space, an additional vaulted first storey volume, containing three bedrooms and two bathrooms, captures breezes and views by means of carefully curated openings.

Distilling the daily habits and routines of the clients into a carefully considered yet simple response, the Wollstonecraft Terrace works as a tool kit for living.
The design transformed the existing layout of a 1990s townhouse and strategically re-oriented the kitchen, dining and living spaces. Enabling and maximising the connection of two perimeter courtyards, daylight, cross ventilation and views are maximised. A simple, clean material palette of white polyurethane and birch plywood joinery conceal ample storage, walk-in pantry, toilet and laundry, whilst creating a calm, reflective space for the occupants.
Castlecrag House is due to commence construction late this year.
Located on the ridge of Castlecrag, with a northerly orientation to the street, and a strongly sloping site to the south, the challenge of this project was how to maximize the sun and privacy, whilst opening to the 180 degree city and harbour views. The proposed features a north-facing courtyard which allows deep penetration of the winter sun into the interior living spaces, whilst creating a private external living space. The massing and materiality of the proposed respond to and celebrate the existing sandstone outcrops and angophora on this unique and important site.
